An attractive and high-quality greenway served by strong national and international transport links would create new commercial opportunities, especially to serve an expanded tourist offering. The successes of the Great Western Greenway in Mayo and the Waterford Greenway show the enormous economic value generated by the demand for active tourism and leisure. Many hotels and restaurants line the proposed route and would be major beneficiaries of the L2S.
And the benefits don’t stop there — other businesses and institutions also gain from the greenway. This is because the L2S is expected to make active commuting (walking & cycling) attractive for many more people. And the benefits for employers of active commuting staff are well known, including:
- healthier staff
- enhanced staff well-being
- reduced pressure on parking places
- shorter traffic travel times for all employees with reduced vehicular traffic on roads
